Sainsbury's buys e-book retailer

Sainsbury's is entering the digital books marketplace, with the announcement that it is buying HMV's stake in Anobii, an online retailer of e-books, for just £1. Sainsbury's said it would end up with a 64% stake in Anobii. Anobii has more than 600,000 users worldwide and offers more than 60,000 books. Sainsbury's said it was committed to becoming "a key player in the digital entertainment market".

Red letter day as Zara wins Louboutin battle


A French court has ruled that fast fashion chain Zara’s use of red soles for its high-heeled shoes do not infringe on the Louboutin trademark, and that the Spanish retailer can continue to manufacture and sell the design. Currently also battling with Yves Saint Laurent in a similar court case, Christian Louboutin sued Zara, claiming the high street retailer had copied his Yo Yo slingback design.

Brits splash the cash on prestige cosmetics


British consumers are splashing the cash on prestige cosmetic brands in spite of the economic downturn. Both Lancôme and Estée Lauder have reported strong growth. Overall, sales of prestige skincare products rose 8.5 per cent by value and 4.4 per cent by volume, while mainstream products fell 0.4 per cent by value and 1.1 per cent by volume last year according to the NPD Group.

J. Crew makes first steps into Asia with Lane Crawford


The American fashion label is said to be “beyond excited” to make its first overseas expansion into a retail environment with Lane Crawford, the renowned Chinese retailer. J. Crew will make its Asian debut in October 2012, when a curated selection of the label’s autumn/winter 2012 ready to wear lines will be available at select Lane Crawford stores, allowing customers in Hong Kong and China to sample the New York-based brand.

Laura Ashley is continuing to show resilience in the face of the gloom that pervades the high street at present after reporting a huge sales rise. The retailer reported a 5.4 per cent rise in like-for-like sales in the 18 weeks to 2 June in comparison to the same period a year before.
