SuperGroup topped the mid-cap index on Wednesday, following a recommendation from Bethany Hocking at Investec that suggested the retailer’s turbulent past is “overshadowing the considerable changes that have taken place”.

The increase in sales indicates that Supergroup, owners of the fashion retail brand Superdry, have recovered from the setbacks which it faced last year.

SuperGroup on Wednesday announced a 13 per cent rise in first-half profit as the company looked to rebuild confidence in the brand after a number of profit warnings in recent quarters. The Cheltenham-based group said it made an underlying pretax profit of £14.7 million in the six months to 28 October, up from £13 million for the same time last year and in line with analysts’ expectations for the period.

SuperGroup on Thursday revealed a lift in profits for its second quarter as the autumn weather encouraged sales of warm clothing and outerwear for the retailer’s Superdry brand. Group sales in the 13 weeks to 28 October were up 20.3 per cent year-on-year to £98.4 million, while UK sales rose 32.2 per cent to £52.2 million.

SuperGroup, parent company of Superdry, got off to a good start for its first quarter, with total sales up 20 per cent to £40.2 million. Like-for-like sales rose by 1.7 per cent for the fashion group, with sales of all-weather clothing such as jackets and gilets faring well during a summer of storms and showers.

Thursday night saw Superdry put its recent troubles on ice as the retailer celebrated the official launch of its new Regent Street flagship store. With all floors now open, shoppers are free to roam the 5,000 sq ft womenswear basement floor, right through to the 6,500 sq ft of formal wear on the second floor.
