US merchants fight $7.2 bn card-fee settlement

Some of the United States’ biggest retailers are battling against a court order that preliminarily approves a USD 7.2 billion settlement between Visa Inc, Mastercard Inc, and merchants over credit card fees, by claiming the decision would violate their rights by preventing them to opt out from the agreement.

International visitors to the UK spent more than £450 million on Visa cards in the first week of the Olympic Games, up 8 per cent from levels a year before. Visa said tourists shelling out on restaurants, nightclubs, theatres and London’s key attractions had helped the boost in spending.

Wave-and-pay technology makes another advance into the main-stream consumer market as Barclays offers stick-on credit cards for mobile phones. The miniature cards, which are about a third of the size of a normal credit card, can be stuck onto the back of phones to enable customers to make wave-and-pay transactions of up to £15 in participating retailers, without the need to enter a pin.

The Co-operative Group will extend its contactless payment technology to reach more than 200 outlets within the M25 in time for the Olympics. As the UK’s first major grocery retailer to introduce the terminals in its stores, the Co-op will now install the payment method at 175 food stores and 28 pharmacies by the end of May.

M-commerce transactions to reach £24bn by 2016

M-commerce transactions are set to be worth £24 billion by 2016, according to two reports released this week. Analysts at IHS Screen Digest and Informa Telecoms & Media have issued separate reports detailing the future of commerce through mobile devices. Informa predicted that m-commerce revenues will reach £24 billion by 2016 with remote payments for physical goods and services and international mobile money transfers accounting for two-thirds of the total m-commerce market.
