Lenovo focuses on smartphone business as PC demand slows Friday, 14th February 2014
Lenovo Group, the computer maker that also owns the Motorola Mobility smartphone business, said on Thursday that quarterly profit rose 30 per cent to a record high thanks to strong smartphone sales. Profit for the three months ended December 31 was USD 265 million, with revenue topping USD 10 billion for the first time, rising 15 per cent to USD 10.8 billion.

In a deal that is set to spell the end to Google Inc.’s venture into consumer mobile devices, Lenovo Group on Wednesday agree to buy the web giant’s Motorola handset division for USD 2.91 billion. The acquisition is the largest-ever tech deal for China, and will see Lenovo enter the US handset market currently dominated by Apple Inc.

Mobile phone company, Motorola, who are owned by Google, has announced that it will be launching a phone that is “always listening” for the owner’s voice commands. By saying “OK Google now” the Moto X’s Touchless Control system will be prompted to listen to instructions.

A German court has ruled in favour of Motorola Mobility’s patent dispute with Apple. The Android smartphone maker has complained that Apple failed to license one of its wireless intellectual properties. Apple now uses the technology in its iPhones and 3G iPads. Although it may not be the final ruling for the case, it is now possible for Motorola to demand Apple remove the feature from its devices or halts sales in Germany altogether.
