Parliament is said to be preparing to extend its inquiry into the British retail sector after a huge response to a request for opinions. Back in March a parliamentary committee invited contributions from retailers and other parties involved in the industry. Although the deadline for entries has since passed, MPs on the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee are understood to be considering an open-ended inquiry.

  Bitter pill for Tesco as analysts forecast 10.7% drop in underlying annual profits while turnaround takes hold

The UK's biggest retailer is now expected to report its first fall in underlying annual profit in two decades, as plans to rejuvenate the business begin to take hold. According to a report by Reuters, analysts have on average expect Tesco to announce an underlying pretax profit of £3.50 billion for the year to 13 Feburary.

BCC: UK will avoid triple dip recession

It’s thought the UK will avoid a third period of recession, according to a survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). According to the BCC, a strong performance by Britain’s service industries in the first three months of 2013 have kept the economy growing, contrary to the economic picture being painted by official figures.

Japan’s retail sales fall 2.3% year-on-year

Japan’s retail sales fell by more than expected in February, as the new government outlines plans to trigger inflation and a boost in consumer spending. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said sales fell 2.3 per cent from a year before, a steeper drop than analysts’ forecast of a 1.2 per cent dip.

March retail sales weakest since August as snow keeps shoppers away

British retail sales in March come in flat compared with a year ago, according to the latest report by the Confederation of British Industry. The CBI said volumes for March retail sales had fallen below average for the time of year and were weaker than anticipated, as an especially cold winter refused to shift, despite the official start of springtime.

Snowfall drags on January’s retail sales

Retail sales fell 0.41 per cent in January as snowfall wiped out any gains made at the start of the year. The latest figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker found demand for January’s traditional sales period led a boost in sales after Christmas, with the first week of the year experiencing the strongest like-for-like sales figures since January 2010.
