M & S new 900,000 sq ft warehouse will help improve online sales

Marks & Spencer have opened a 900,000 sq ft warehouse in Castle Donington in a bid to improve its online trading. The clothing and homeware retailer currently only sells 15 per cent of its products online, 20 per cent less than major rival Next. The new facilities will mean the retailer will be able to deal with 1m orders a day, compared with a few hundred currently.

Diesel has confirmed Nicola Formichetti has joined the popular denim brand as its new artistic director. In his new role, Nicola will oversee all creative activities of the Diesel main line, including the areas of product, communications and interior design. Having worked everyone from Lady Gaga to Uniqlo, Dolce & Gabbana and Nike, Formichetti will now co-ordinate the existing Diesel Creative Team along with his new recruits from different fields.

Behind the scenes of Marc Jacob's advert for Diet Coke. Fashion designer Marc Jacobs has been named by Diet Coke as its new creative director as the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary. Jacobs will join a stellar line-up of previous creative directors for the drinks brand including Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier, with a limited edition run of bottles and cans, along with a “stylish and light-hearted” makeover.

Reporting directly to managing director Andy Street, Lewis will lead the online time, as well as assuming responsibility for profitability and development of the retailer’s online channel.

Former senior style editor of British Harper’s Bazaar, Carmen Borgonova will join My-Wardrobe in January 2013 as fashion director for the luxury online retailer. Borgonova will replace buying and merchandising director Luisa De Paula, who is set to leave the company after five years in the role.

Tesco on Tuesday announced UK fresh food commercial director Andrew Yaxley would leave his post for a new management role. UK commercial director John Scouler will replace Yaxley, as Tesco looks to strengthen its fresh food offering. "At Tesco we place great emphasis on developing our colleagues to ensure we have the best possible pipeline of general management talent for the future," said a Tesco spokesman.

BRC warns on escalating food prices

The British Retail Consortium this week warned that food price inflation is set to rise again, as poor US harvests and the wettest British summer in 100 years will only serve to exacerbate the problem. The latest Shop Price Index from the BRC showed overall annual change in shop price in August picked up slightly to 1.1 per cent from 1.0 per cent in July.

Yet more trouble for HMV: shares slide on double exit

HMV saw a sharp 6.3 per cent drop in shares to 3.4p in trading this morning as the troubled retailer confirmed finance director David Wolffe would also leave the business. The news comes less than a week after chief executive Simon Fox announced he would step down from his role last Thursday.

Selfridges finance director jumps ship to Harrods

John Edgar, group finance director at Selfridges, will step down from his role to take up a similar position at Harrods. Having worked at Selfridges since 2008, Edgar will now take up the role of chief financial officer at Harrods, replacing Benedict Smith. Edgar has previously worked at Woolworths, after spending seven years as director of strategy at House of Fraser.
