Samsung is going toe-to-toe with Apple by unveiling its new smartphone, the Galaxy S5, which, like Apple’s iPhone 5S, has a built-in sensor allowing users to unlock their phones with a fingerprint scan. Unveiled on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the new model also has an improved camera, a bigger screen, and a built-in heart rate monitor to complement three upcoming devices from its Gear Fit fitness range.
Samsung and Cisco enter patent agreement Thursday, 6th February 2014
Following the news that Apple is being taken to court over patent infringements, arch rival Samsung and mobile communications firm Cisco, have entered a ten-year agreement to share patents. It follows the news that Samsung and Google entered a similar agreement in January. The agreement will allow both Samsung and Cisco to share patents without the fear of being sued for the next ten years.
Apple to contest patent infringement in Germany Thursday, 6th February 2014
Apple has been embroiled in another patent battle regarding the iPhone’s emergency phone-dialling feature, the regional court of Mannheim, Germany said. German-patent holding company IPCom is demanding EUR 1.57 billion in damages from the tech giants. The trial, which involves a dispute over two patents, will start on February 11.
Carphone Warehouse to run 60 stand-alone Samsung stores Wednesday, 29th January 2014
Europe’s foremost independent mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, has signed a deal with Korean mobile phone giant Samsung Electronics to operate 60 stand-alone stores across Europe for the retailer. Stores will be rolled out in the next three months across seven European markets, including the UK, Portugal, Sweden, Ireland, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Samsung Electronics and internet goliath Google have tied up a 10-year global patent deal. The cross-licensing agreement covers patents owned by the companies, as well as any filed in the next ten years. The companies issued a statement shortly after the deal, saying that the agreement “would lead to deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future projects”.
Alibaba integrates payment system into Chinese micro-blogging site Tuesday, 7th January 2014
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has agreed to integrate its Alipay payment service into Sina Weibo – a social media microblogging platform. With ‘Weibo Payment’ users can connect their Alipay accounts and buy items without having to log in. Wang Gaofei, the general manager of Sina Weibo, said that the co-existence of the social network – China’s Twitter equivalent – with a convenient in-app payments solution would be a “potent combination” for social e-commerce.

Swedish fashion retailer H&M, along with omni-channel advertising firm Delivery Agent, is set to showcase a never-before-seen technology which allows consumers to engage with TV advertising and buy products from the comfort of their own living room. The pioneering t-commerce advert will feature David Beckham’s new Bodywear collection and will feature during the second quarter of the Super Bowl.

Thanks to the high-profile launch of Apple’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, Samsung has lost its grasp at the top of the US smartphone market, with the iPhone 5S outselling Samsung’s Galaxy S4.
