Mother’s Day brings 14% rise in weekly sales for John Lewis

Total sales rose 14.3 per cent year-on-year for John Lewis, as an early Mother’s Day boosted a strong set of results across the partnership’s UK stores. All of John Lewis’ selling branches reported increases on last year, with Swindon leading the way yet again with a 28 per cent rise in sales, Chester close behind with a 25 per cent increase and Milton Keynes up 22 per cent as shoppers made the most of its full refurbishment.

Leading department store chain John Lewis has been criticised after announcing that its suppliers will be subject to a rebate, with the amount being dependent on the rate of the sales increase of each supplier. The Telegraph reported that John Lewis issued a letter to its suppliers stating that, effective from the beginning of last month, the scheme will impose a reduction on each supplier’s annual invoice, with the total linked to their rate of sales growth.

Another strong week for John Lewis as sales rise 13.3%

Sales grew by an impressive 13.3 per cent last week as 16 of John Lewis’ department stores reported a double-digit rise in sales figures. The retailer’s new format shops in Swindon and Tamworth lead the way for sales in the seven days to 2 March, up 33 per cent and 25.6 per cent respectively, compared with last year’s results.

John Lewis Partnership is expected to raise its staff bonuses of up to 16 per cent of their salary next week as the retailer’s profits go from strength to strength. The employee- owned UK partnership, which operates John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, last year gave its 81,000 employees a bonus of 14 per cent from a pot of £165.2 million.

John Lewis' Kingston store. John Lewis on Wednesday revealed the first details of a multi-million pound refurbishment programme which will look to focus on extensive work at four stores this year, along with smaller investments across the retailer’s 39 stores before 2014.

John Lewis reported a “mixed bag of events” for the week ending 15 February, but still managed an 8 per cent rise in sales on the year before. The department store said six out of its seven days of trading reported positive sales gains, with especially strong weekend trading clocking up a 16 per cent rise in sales on Sunday 10 February and an 11.5 per cent rise on Saturday 15 February.

John Lewis is preparing for a dramatic expansion of its online shopping operations as it joins the Collect+ scheme. Shoppers will soon be able to pick up and return items bought on the John Lewis website at up to 5,000 independent retailers. From this autumn, John Lewis customers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and south-west England will be able to collect items at about 1,000 outlets for a charge of £3.

Department stores reap the rewards as shoppers spend 12% more online in 2012

A survey by Barclaycard found shoppers spent 12.8 per cent more online in 2012, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all retail transactions. Department stores proved to be one of the biggest areas for growth in online shopping, rising 37 per cent online, with John Lewis recording its best web year to date.
