Following the news that Apple is being taken to court over patent infringements, arch rival Samsung and mobile communications firm Cisco, have entered a ten-year agreement to share patents. It follows the news that Samsung and Google entered a similar agreement in January. The agreement will allow both Samsung and Cisco to share patents without the fear of being sued for the next ten years.
Apple has been embroiled in another patent battle regarding the iPhone’s emergency phone-dialling feature, the regional court of Mannheim, Germany said. German-patent holding company IPCom is demanding EUR 1.57 billion in damages from the tech giants. The trial, which involves a dispute over two patents, will start on February 11.
In a deal that is set to spell the end to Google Inc.’s venture into consumer mobile devices, Lenovo Group on Wednesday agree to buy the web giant’s Motorola handset division for USD 2.91 billion. The acquisition is the largest-ever tech deal for China, and will see Lenovo enter the US handset market currently dominated by Apple Inc.
Samsung Electronics and internet goliath Google have tied up a 10-year global patent deal. The cross-licensing agreement covers patents owned by the companies, as well as any filed in the next ten years. The companies issued a statement shortly after the deal, saying that the agreement “would lead to deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future projects”.
Britain’s online retail economy generated a trade surplus of £720 million in 2013, according to new research by OC&C Strategy Consultants and Google. The US and Germany were a distant second and third with trade surplus’ of £110 million and £12 million respectively. Research by IBM has found that Christmas Day m-commerce sales were driven primarily by devices running Apple iOS software. Devices using the iOS software – including iPhones and iPads – accounted for more than five times the online sales of devices running Google Inc.’s Android, according to finds by the IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark.

Former chief executive of Apple, John Sculley, is reportedly considering a move for smartphone rivals BlackBerry, according to the Globe and Mail. Speaking to the Canadian newspaper, Sculley said: “The only thing I would say is, I think there’s a lot of future value in Blackberry”.
