Sony say no to proposed spin off of entertainment business Tuesday, 14th May 2013
Sony Corp have quashed a proposal from hedge fund Third Point asking for it to spin off part of its entertainment sector. In a statement from a Sony spokesman, Sony reiterated that: "As President and CEO Kazuo Hirai has said repeatedly, the entertainment businesses are important contributors to Sony's growth and are not for sale, and we look forward to continuing constructive dialogue with our shareholders as we pursue our strategy".

John Lewis fetes arrival of spring as fashion sales surge Friday, 3rd May 2013
Hotter climes have helped fashion sales at John Lewis rise 19.6 per cent on the same week a year before. The department store on Friday reported a stronger week with sales up 5.3 per cent in the seven days to 27 April, as fashion sales managed to offset tougher trading at the retailer’s home and electricals and home technology directorates.

Spring brings mixed fortunes for John Lewis Friday, 26th April 2013
Sales at John Lewis came in flat at -0.1 per cent for the week as customers chose to make the most of the sunshine instead of shopping. The department store’s online director Mark Lewis on Friday reported “a number of factors” had contributed into make the seven days to 20 April a “challenging” week for the retailer compared to the same time a year before, with customers reportedly soaking up the sun in their gardens instead of on the high street.

Sales rise 23.1% for John Lewis as department store looks to cater for “every eventuality” Friday, 5th April 2013
Sales rose 23.1 per cent year-on-year for the department store group, as Easter purchases boosted strong like-for-like sales and online growth in the seven days to 30 March. The Easter holidays brought a rise in footfall for John Lewis stores, as sales rose 14.6 per cent on the Easter week from 2012.

Hilco strikes £50m deal for HMV Friday, 5th April 2013
After months of uncertainty, it seems HMV could be about to emerge from administration as part of a £50 million deal with Hilco. According to Sky News, a deal between the two companies could be stuck as soon as Friday, with the chain expected to be run by incumbent HMV executives alongside newly-appointed Hilco executives.

Sir James Dyson appoints sons to board of directors Tuesday, 2nd April 2013
Sir James Dyson has appointed his two sons, Sam and Jake, as non-executive directors in his company’s board. Sir James’ son Jake is a 40 year old design engineer while Sam is a 35 year old musician. Both are business owners and both have been present at Dyson’s quarterly shareholder meetings.
