The nation’s second largest supermarket group will have to pay more than £55,000 in fines and costs after breaching fire safety rules at its Slough store. The BBC on Thursday reported that the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority had brought two charges to court after a store inspection in June 2010.

Asda, the UK’s second largest supermarket group, has reported a strong sales growth for its first quarter after winning market share with its low-price product focus. According to Reuters, sales at Asda stores open a year more, excluding fuel and VAT sales tax, rose 2.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to 31 March.

Supermarkets to be ‘named and shamed’ in crack-down as suppliers fight back

New measures to name, shame, and fine supermarkets that place unfair pressure on their suppliers will be unveiled during the Queen’s Speech on Wednesday. According to the Daily Mail the new Groceries Code Adjudicator Bill will give suppliers based in Britain and abroad the right to act as anonymous “whistle-blowers”, as well as granting an independent adjudicator the right to investigate complaints about a grocery retailer with turnover of £1 billion or more.

The UK’s fourth largest supermarket has reported a fall in like-for-like sales of 1 per cent excluding fuel for its first quarter. Morrisons suffered from tough comparables from the year before, which saw like-for-like sales rise 2.5 per cent on the back of a warm Easter and nationwide royal wedding celebrations.

Asda has now overtaken Tesco to become the third largest entertainment retailer in the UK. The latest results from Kantar Worldpanel show that Tesco’s hold on the video, market and games market fell from 11.3 per cent in the first three months of 2011 to 9 per cent in the same period for this year.
