Long-dubbed the ‘lipstick effect’ for the rise in beauty sales correlating to a dip in consumer confidence, it seems British shoppers are still resorting to small luxury purchases to boost their mood. The latest report from Mintel found spending on beauty and personal care products has increased 11 per cent since the beginning of the credit crisis in 2007.

EU bans sale of all animal-tested cosmetics Tuesday, 12th March 2013
Sale of animal-tested cosmetics is now under a complete ban in all European Union countries. The EU announced a ban of animal-testing in all 27 of its countries as early as 2009, but the new regulations prevent animal-tested products from all over the world being distributed in the EU. The EU commission spent EUR 238 million from 2007 to 2011 in their research for alternatives to animal testing.

Victoria’s Secret is set to launch a flagship store in Meadowhall after signing up for a 13,000 sq ft store on a 15 year lease. The American lingerie and fashion retailer opened its first store in London last summer on the city’s prestigious Bond Street. It’s new Meadowhall store will be its largest outside the capital, opening in September and situated in the central dome of the Meadowhall shopping centre.

Christian Dior SA, parent company of the Dior fashion house and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton reported a 14 per cent on-year rise in sales to EUR 22.81 billion in the nine months to the end of January. Sales of Christian Dior Couture rose 19 per cent to EUR 971 million in the nine months from 1 May 2012 to 31 January, while Dior continue to expand its retail network, growing by 24 per cent for the period and boosted by all product categories.

MAC Cosmetics is set to launch their new flagship store on Champs-Elysées, Paris on Friday, according to WWD.com. This store will be MAC’s third-largest store, the two New York sites being the only two to surpass it. The 4,022-square-foot property is situated in the busy Champs-Elysées that attracts more than 170 million people annually.
