Two of the most well-known publishers in the UK - Penguin and Random House - are reportedly considering a merger. If the deal goes ahead, the combined companies would have a 27 per cent share of the UK’s book market.

Random House is currently the UK’s biggest publisher, with Penguin in third place.

Philip Downer, the former head of Borders UK and current boss of retail consultancy firm Front of Store, told the BBC: "It's a recognition that they don't individually have the scale to be able to stand up to companies like Amazon or Apple".
