Bradford-based Morrisons has been busy preparing for an M25 take-over, as the retailer looks to take its convenience store format nationwide.

As part of Morrison’s southern expansion drive, the grocer this week appointed Gordon Mowat, group strategy director, as managing director of its convenience arm.

The newly created role will see Mowat lead a 70-store rollout of Morrison’s M-local convenience stores by the end of 2013.

According to a report by the Evening Standard, around 50 of the new M-Local stores will open in the South East, as the business looks to improve its presence in the South.

Chief executive Dalton Philips said: “We are now ready to expand at pace and I am delighted that Gordon will be spearheading the growth of M-locals, particularly into London and the South-East.”

Founded in 1899, Morrisons currently holds an 11.8 per cent hold on the grocery market, but just 31 stores inside the M25. Keen to convert southern shoppers to Morrisons, the retailer recently acquired a 100,000 sq ft distribution centre in Feltham, West London, to support its expansion into convenience for London and the South East.
