The department store continued its winning streak over the summer as sales grew 15.3 per cent in the week to 1 September.

Back-to-school purchases helped John Lewis reach total sales of £70.5 million for the week, including a 20 per cent year-on-year increase on bank holiday Monday.

The retailer said the beginning of term had helped boost sales of tablets and iPads, as well as the more traditional school staples such as school uniform.

John Lewis’ supermarket chain Waitrose also saw a strong week for sales, rising 6.4 per cent to £105.4 million, as parents looked to stock up on lunch box fillers and easy dinners.

It’s hoped that after a summer of Olympic Games and Jubilee celebrations, John Lewis can continue its sales rally on the high street, defying the British Retail Consortium’s results earlier this week, which found total retail sales rose by just 1.6 per cent year-on-year in August.
