Solid gains for Dixons as sales rise 5% Thursday, 6th September 2012

Despite a gloomy European outlook, Dixons Retail plc saw a five per cent like-for-like growth in sales for its first quarter, thanks to a swift summer trade in the UK.

As Europe’s second-largest electrical retailer, Dixons makes just less than half of its sales in the UK, with like-for-like sales in the UK & Ireland up seven per cent for the period, following an 8 per cent rise for the previous quarter.

The company, which also trades the Currys and PC World brands in the UK, has managed to withstand a stormy European economy in the last few quarters, adding that store sales open at least a year across Europe were up five per cent in the 12 weeks to 21 July.

"While it is still early in our financial year, I am encouraged by the start we have made across the group," chief executive Sebastian James said in a statement.
