Kurt Geiger halts UK expansion Monday, 3rd September 2012

Kurt Geiger is concentrating on overseas growth as it claims that rocketing business rates and high rents are “killing UK retail”.

The footwear and accessories retailer currently operates 60 shops and 200 concessions.

The group is now expected to focus on the international market where it currently has 25 stores in the Middle East, Russia, Turkey, France and Israel.

Chief executive Neil Clifford told the Telegraph that "Business rates actually are what are killing UK retail, probably more than rents. Northern UK cities generally are a lot higher and can be as much as double some of the markets in the south."
