South Africa threatens UK with wine war Friday, 24th August 2012

South Africa is considering launching a “trade war” against the United Kingdom after two of the latter’s biggest supermarkets decided to bulk-buy wine instead of purchasing it by bottle, as they did previously.

According to the Independent, 700 jobs have been lost in South Africa after Tesco and Sainsbury’s took the decision to bottle the wine themselves.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told the Independent: “Buying wine in bulk doesn't reduce the quality of the wine and is common across wine producing countries." A Tesco spokesman said: "We buy less than a quarter of our South African wine in bulk. It helps to keep the cost down for our customers and also lowers the carbon footprint of the product by reducing the need to transport large quantities of glass to the UK.”
