Supermarket giant Tesco may be fined up for £200,000 after employees at one of its warehouses were found to be working illegally, according to the Telegraph.

The students were working far beyond the number of hours their visas allowed at the warehouse in Croydon, south London.

UK Border officials arrested 20 of the students for breaches of visa conditions.

It is understood that nine of the students were deported.

Tesco has subsequently been issued with a “notification of potential liability”.

Currently, authorities are considering whether to take the matter further and issue the liability notice, along with a fine of up to £10,000 per worker.

The retailer is said to be co-operating fully with the investigation, which is ongoing.
