Tesco’s sales growth rose to 3.4 per cent in the 12 weeks to 5 August, but the UK’s number one retailer still lags behind rivals Asda and Sainsbury’s.

The latest figures from Kantar WorldPanel show Tesco was able to accelerate its rate of growth from 0.7 per cent to 3.4 per cent across three months to August.

However, Asda, the nation’s second largest supermarket chain, saw sales grow 6.2 per cent for the period, whilst Sainsbury’s recorded a 4.6 per cent lift in growth. In fact only Morrisons, the smallest member of the Big Four grocers, recorded a slower growth rate than Tesco, with a 1.8 per cent rise in the 12 weeks to August.

Overall, the grocery market grew 3.9 per cent according to a Kantar report cited by Reuters.
