Department store sales leapt 22.4 per cent year on year for John Lewis last week, thanks to a feel-good factor generated by a record gold medal win for Team GB.

Britain’s biggest department store group said sales rose to £63.3 million for the week to 4 August, marking the first days of trading of its fiscal second half.

"London 2012 merchandise leapt forward again by 51 percent on last week. Undoubtedly, the feel-good factor of Team GB's medal success has had a direct impact in uplifting sales, not only in our London shops but also in our branches throughout the country," the group told press on Friday.

Sales in its electricals and home technology category rose 31.2 per cent, with wide screen televisions selling well. Fashion sales, which have proved rocky through summer’s unseasonable weather, rose 25.5 per cent, whilst sales in its home category were up 14.6 per cent.

John Lewis’ grocer operation Waitrose also saw a boost in sales, up 9.7 per cent to £108.7 million in the week to 3 August.
