New plans to extend Kent’s shopping centre by 375,000 sq ft could see Bluewater become the UK’s largest shopping centre.

Bluewater owners Lend Lease will begin public consultation for the extension in September, with a full application submitted later this year. If successful, the shopping centre, which already stands at 1.6 million sq ft, would overshadow rivals Westfield’s London malls and Capital Shopping Centre’s MetroCentre.

Opened in 1999, Bluewater currently operates 330 stores, along with 3 anchor retailers and 40 cafes and restaurants, employing around 7,000 members of staff.
