The Government will today announce a £5.5 million package of support as well as 15 new towns that will be granted pilot status under the changes suggested by retail industry guru Mary Portas.

Following on from the 12 initial towns chosen in May, 15 more will gain Portas Pilot status, including Ashford, Berwick, Loughborough, Rotherham, Lowestoft and Morecambe.

Each of the towns will receive around £100,000 to invest in their high street, with the remaining 392 towns not chosen by the Government to share the rest of the funding.

Commenting on the support for the Portas Pilots so far, Martin Blackwell, the chief executive of the Association of Town Centre Management, said: "The response to the challenge created by the government's response to the Mary Portas report from communities in towns and cities across England was enormous."
