High street sales up 1.1% for June Friday, 6th July 2012

Strong headway made in non-fashion lines were dragged down by struggling homewares sales for June 2012.

The latest figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker show spending continued to grow throughout June, with like-for-like sales across medium-sized chains up 1.1 per cent compared to last year.

An extended Jubilee Bank Holiday gave retailers a boost at the beginning on June, with aggressive promotions and summer sales also stimulating demand. However a mixed bag of unseasonable weather and short-lived bursts of sunshine led to a shift in shopping trends from the usual seasonal buys. Recent news of a double-dip recession and eurozone crisis did not help matters, leaving consumer confidence battered from trouble on the continent.

Fashion experienced a flat month in June, rising just 0.52 per cent as the positive impact from summer promotions offset by unseasonable weather. Non fashion sales were stronger, rising 4.2 per cent, with luxury and gift purchases proving popular.

However strong comparisons and the unpredictable weather wounded homeware purchases, which suffered a 5.84 per cent decline year-on-year, against strong comparisons in 2011.
