Sarson’s vinegar and Haywards pickles have been sold by owner Premier Foods to Japanese firm Mizkan in a deal taking another set of British brands overseas.

The leading vinegar brand and pickles businesses were both sold on Friday in a deal worth £41 million. Seen as essential condiments for the traditional British meal, the companies will now be run by the Japanese firm, who will take on all existing members of staff once the deal is completed next month.

Speaking in light of the acquisition, Mizkan's chief executive, Kazuhide Matazaemon Nakano VIII, said:

"We are excited to acquire two strong and iconic brands that have such a deep heritage in the UK. Sarson's and Haywards are beloved by consumers and we look forward to investing in the brands and adding to their legacy.

“They fit well with our global portfolio, are an excellent strategic fit and provide a solid foundation for growth in the UK."

The move comes as Premier Foods looks to focus its business on a number of core brands, including Hovis, Mr Kipling and OXO. Roberson’s marmalade, Angel Delight and Bird’s custard are all up for sale by the group.
