US retail sales down for second consecutive month Thursday, 14th June 2012

Retail sales in the US have fallen for the second month in a row amidst industry fears that Americans are reigning in their spending once more.

The latest figures from the Commerce Department found sales fell 0.2 per cent in May. Taking out the effects of a strong rise in car purchases, retail sales suffered their weakest month since May 2010, with a drop in sales across eight of the 13 categories monitored suggesting Americans are already taking heed of the slow-down in the economy.
