Sainsbury’s bucks the trend with solid rise in sales Wednesday, 13th June 2012

Sainsbury’s manages to outperform the market with like-for-like sales excluding fuel up 1.4 per cent in its first quarter.

The retailer’s focus on smaller stores led to a 16 per cent growth in the category during the three months to the end of June, while online sales were also up an impressive 20 per cent.

The results come in sharp contrast to Tesco’s announcement earlier this week that it had experienced a fall in UK sales.

In light of the performance, chief executive Justin King said the retailer is now “well placed to continue to outperform the market”.
