Proving to be the perfect distraction from the social network’s drama-laden initial public offering this month, Facebook is now thought to be preparing its own handset and the software to operate it, as the company looks to gain new ground on Google and Apple.
According to the Guardian, sources from Silicon Valley are reporting that Facebook has enlisted former Apple software and hardware engineers to help build the smartphone, with hopes of releasing the first model next year.
Facebook chief technology officer Bret Taylor is thought to be heading up the project, currently codenamed Buffy.
