Britain’s biggest department store group has reported another week of double digit weekly sales increases, thanks to strong home and electrical sales.

John Lewis on Friday announced sales increased 11.6 per cent year-on-year to £59.7 million in the week to 19 May.

Electricals and home technology rose 36.7 per cent for the week thanks to the digital switchover, while sales in the home category were up 4.8 per cent, helped by demand for Jubilee products.

"John Lewis enjoyed another solid week, comfortably up on last year. Comparisons are as tricky as ever with the weather and the tail end of the digital switchover on our side while at the same time we were up against some strong trade thanks to some active price matching of a competitor's sale last year," said Simon Russell, director retail operations development.

John Lewis’ supermarket operation Waitrose also reported positive trading for the week to 19 May, with sales up 6.6 per cent to £107.9 million.
