Samsung beat long-term rivals Apple and Nokia in its first quarter to become the world’s top mobile phone maker.

The South Korean tech giant on Friday reported back on a milestone first-quarter to end of March. A surge in sales of its Galaxy smartphones saw Samsung outsell Apple’s iPhone, with 44.5 million handsets sold for the quarter, compared with Apple’s 35.1 million.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics reported by the Telegraph, Samsung also managed to overtake Nokia as the world’s top handset maker, knocking the Finnish company off its first place position after 14 straight years at the top.

Samsung sold 93.5 million handsets during its first quarter, representing 25.4 per cent of the global phone market.
