Global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo revealed that Android is holding onto the lead, although Apple has increased its market share in the UK to 29.1 per cent from 21.7 per cent a year ago.

Windows Phone 7 also climbed as it took over 2 per cent of the market for the very first time.

The study also found that around 81 per cent of handset owners have accessed social networking sites and apps on their devices in the past month.
