McArthurGlen reports on record Christmas trading Wednesday, 18th January 2012

The McArthurGlen designer outlet in Ashford, Kent

The designer outlet group has reported record trading days over the peak Christmas period, boosted by a strong early shopper spend in November.

McArthurGlen group said year-on-year sales and footfall increased 11.6 per cent and 11.1 per cent respectively from 7 November to 31 December.

December saw a consistently strong trade with annual sales and footfall up 15.4 per cent and 14.3 per cent respectively, with an increase in sales over the weeks running up to Christmas helping to deliver an overall robust set of results.

What’s more, the group recorded two record-breaking post- Christmas days on 27 and 28 December, with sales growth approaching double digits after an increase of over 22 per cent in the previous year.

Colin Wilding, UK Country Manager at McArthurGlen, said: “This November and December, we have seen a significant increase in the number of shoppers visiting our McArthurGlen centres to stock up on Christmas presents for friends and family with sales of ‘typical’ gift items significantly up on previous years, alongside sales of our fashion offering. Gifting played an integral role in our Christmas advertising campaign – we are not just about our fantastic fashion offer but also have become a gift destination in our own right.”

The group had introduced 15 new store openings into its UK portfolio in the lead-up to Christmas, including Billabong, Fiorelli, Hugo Boss, Jaeger, Jigsaw and The Kooples.
