The host with the most helps Booths boast 7% rise in Christmas trading Wednesday, 11th January 2012

Upmarket grocer Booths has revealed dinner party hosts looking to splash out on entertaining guests helped fuel a festive sales rise.

The family-owned retailer, which operates 28 stores in the North of England said total sales over Christmas rose 7.45 per cent and by 3 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

Demand for champagne, claret and regional beers showed strong growth along with premium dinner party food, such as dressed crab, venison and smoked salmon.

Trading director Chris Dee said the figures pointed to a trend to 'entertain impressively' at home.

“Entertaining has been key to our increased performance, and the figures indicate our shoppers threw a great party over Christmas and New Year.

“It's clear they were shopping for something exceptional and impressive to serve.”

Champagne sales rose 32 per cent over the Christmas trading period, while revenues for bottle of claret were up 39 per cent and regional beers by 25 per cent.
