Sainsbury's opens 1,000th UK store Wednesday, 30th November 2011

Sainsbury’s is celebrating the opening of its thousandth store.

The milestone came with the opening of a new 60,000 square foot supermarket in Irvine, Scotland. This new store is its 59th north of the border.

In total, the grocer operates 576 supermarkets and 424 convenience stores across the UK.

To celebrate this landmark occasion, Sainsbury’s is doubling its staff discount to 20 per cent for three days, beginning on 1 December.

Chief executive Justin King said: “I am delighted that our colleagues can share in the success of this achievement through doubling their discount this coming weekend.

“Through our investment we expect to create over 6,000 new job opportunities every year until 2020 – that’s 50,000 jobs in total.”
