Online shopping set to reach almost £8bn this Christmas Monday, 14th November 2011

Online shopping over the festive period is set to smash previous records, with consumers expected to spend £7.75 billion during the five weeks from the end of November.

The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has forecast that online sales will be up 14 per cent year-on-year for the five weeks from 28 November, with nearly half the amount (£3.72 billion) expected to be spent in the first two weeks.

Many businesses are approaching the festive season with caution as consumers have far less cash to part with this year. In spite of this, online retail is expected to enjoy a bumper season as consumers continue to prowl the web for bargains.

The report also predicts that m-commerce will come to the fore this year as 35 per cent of people plan to shop via their smartphones and tablet computers this Christmas.

Chris Webster, vice president and head of retail and consumer products at Capgemini, said: “Shoppers have become very savvy, out of both need and convenience - we’ll hunt down the best bargains online to get the most out of our Christmas budget, but also because we can, easily and conveniently.”
