Tesco prepares for price war Thursday, 22nd September 2011

Tesco is preparing to launch a major price-cutting initiative this weekend in an attempt to attract cash-strapped consumers.

All store managers have been instructed to come into work this Sunday in order to prepare for the announcement. It is expected that the supermarket will concentrate on simpler promotions, with far fewer buy-one-get-one-free offers and more low, round prices.

The grocer is also expected to utilise its Clubcard scheme to reduce the number of shoppers who are increasingly inclined to flit between Tesco and its rivals in search of lower prices.

Analysts have indicated that the biggest losers from any major initiative would be Ocado, which has publicly promised to price-match Tesco on most brands, and J Sainsbury, which is currently testing a similar price-match scheme in Northern Ireland.
