C-stores are hot property for supermarkets Wednesday, 6th July 2011

The jury is out on whether supermarket groups’ incursion into convenience formats will revive high streets, reports Estates Gazette.

Sainsbury’s plans to open 50-100 convenience outlets annually and Tesco about 150 a year. Asda is adding more than 150 smaller stores bought from Netto. William Morrison will shortly test its first convenience stores and Waitrose will have 53 convenience stores and smaller supermarkets by the end of 2012.

The newspaper says the big grocery chains are also scouring local parades of shops or housing developments for smaller sites, converting disused pubs, cinemas and even churches.
