Ikea expansion stalled by planning restrictions Monday, 4th July 2011

Ikea chief executive Mikael Ohlsson today announced he was looking to open three new London stores but was struggling to obtain planning permission.

Ohlsson said he wishes to build stores in run-down industrial areas of the capital but did not give specific details about possible locations. He told the Wall Street Journal: “In the UK, they want retail to get into the city. But that’s not good for furniture retail. Especially in bulk. We prefer to be farther away from the city centre. But the permits are taking a lot of time. Rules are rules.”

In spite of the rising costs of production that served as a nail in the coffin for Habitat, Ohlsson has pledged that prices will continue to fall at Ikea due to their continuing commitments to use better materials and make use of efficient and cost-effective transport.
