Nike slogans whip up anti-drug storm Monday, 27th June 2011
Sportswear monolith Nike has come under fire recently due to their controversial new slogans.Phrases including "get high", "dope" and "ride pipe" have angered consumers and politicians alike due to their supposed link to drug culture. The slogans are, as Nike says, part of a wider lexis which "skaters, BMX'ers and surfers use every day around the world."
American anti-drug groups and mayor of Boston Thoman Menino have waded into the debate, claiming the slogans encapsulate "the language of addicts". Concerned groups are calling for Nike to pull the line from shelves.
Nike has officially distanced themselves from any association with drug culture and has pointed out that "sport is an antidote to drugs".
