House of Fraser lead the market with early summer Sales Friday, 3rd June 2011

House of Fraser and Debenhams are expected to trigger an early summer Sale season, by knocking down prices up to a week earlier than last year.

The department stores will go on Sale next Thursday, in a move that is likely to force most of the high street into action to compete.

According to industry insiders April’s feel-good-factor from the royal wedding and warm bank holidays hasn’t spread into May figures, with fashion sales falling 10.4 percent in the week ending 29 May.

BDO’s High Street Sales Tracker said the market experienced its worst fashion rates so far this year, impacted by strong comparisons from year-on-year figures.

It is not yet known how many of the concessionaires in House of Fraser and Debenhams will join in the early Sale activity. Harvey Nichols and Harrods confirmed they would not be pushing their Sale dates forward and will go on Sale on 14 and 18 June respectively.
